API Governance for Scale Podcast Launch

This week, I launched the API Governance for Scale Podcast. In the first episode of the podcast, I host Alastair Parker, creator of Jargon.sh, on the topic “Linting isn’t Governance“. Here are three key ideas we covered:

  1. API linting is valuable, but by itself, it is not API governance.

  2. Alastair talked about production-side governance (how you design and deliver APIs), and consumption-side governance (how you serve and operate APIs - the runtime side). Organizations tend to over invest in the consumption-side, because it tends to be less difficult to install than fixing broken production-side processes.

  3. Use a ‘town-planning’ view to see your full API landscape, not just individual APIs.

API Design Methods: Reviewing the Synergetic Blueprint on Culture and Resilience

In Issue #66, I began my review of the Synergetic Blueprint (SB), covering the API Adoption dimension (User-Centric APIs, Workflow Orchestration and Composability) and part of the Operational Efficiency dimension (API Reuse, API Evolution). In Issue #67, I continued with the Innovation dimension, evaluating the SB on Faster Time to Market. In this post, I will complete the review by covering the remaining six criteria across four dimensions.

As a reminder, here is a table summarizing the review dimensions from my evaluation framework.

Areas of Moderate Support

Four of the remaining criteria land in a similar range (moderate support), so I will cover them together before turning to the two most distinctive findings.

Criteria: Standardization and Consistency. How does the method facilitate the reuse of standardized domain data and bounded-context definitions, rather than creating inconsistent versions? Does the method incorporate requirements from the organization's API style guide to ensure API design consistency?

The SB's DDD foundations are a real asset here. The Visual Glossary and Ubiquitous Language created during Domain Storytelling and EventStorming give teams a shared domain vocabulary, and the Context Map clarifies API boundaries. This translates to consistent data models in bounded contexts, and these show up in the API. However, in generating the API definition file, the SB does not mention including the organization's API design style guide (perhaps as a link in the prompt, or as an MCP tool). This would help ensure the generated contract is consistent with org standards.

3 — Moderate Support

Criteria: Documentation Completeness (Score: 3). Does the method support the creation of comprehensive API descriptions, workflow examples and usage patterns for a great developer experience (DX)?

The SB produces an impressive trail of design artifacts: Domain Stories, Context Maps, the API Product Canvas, ADRs, and generated API contracts. But there is a distinction between design documentation and consumer-facing documentation. The method does not include a step to urge designers to create getting-started guides or code samples. I would also have liked to see it include a step to create executable workflow descriptions (like Arazzo). I don't expect a full guidance on consumer-facing content, but a suggestion to do it would be nice.

Criteria: Faster Experimentation. Does the method incorporate techniques for getting feedback on the API design via mocking and early prototyping?

The SB has no explicit mocking or prototyping step. The method moves from the API Product Canvas to AI-generated contracts, with no stage where prospective consumers can interact with a mock server and provide feedback on the design. This gap is especially noticeable because once you have an OpenAPI definition, spinning up a mock with tools like Prism or Microcks is trivial. So I think that adding a "Mock and Validate" step between contract generation and contract approval would strengthen the method, especially for external facing request-response APIs.

3 — Moderate Support

Criteria: Training on API Design. How easy is it to train a team on the API design methodology? Are there reusable templates, tools, training resources, or an active community available to support practitioners?

The SB draws on many techniques (Business Model Canvas, Wardley Mapping, Domain Storytelling, EventStorming, Context Mapping, and the API Product Canvas), each with its own learning curve. The individual techniques have strong community support, and Junker and Lazzaretti's book [1] provides detailed guidance. But the integrated SB workflow is new, with no large practitioner community yet. For teams already practicing DDD, adopting the SB is straightforward. For teams new to DDD, the learning curve is steep, as they would need to learn DDD and the SB simultaneously, and running good EventStorming sessions requires experienced facilitation. Also, I would like to see a dedicated website that explains the SB method, including a collection of canvases, videos and other training resources. This can be helpful to organizations trying to adopt this method.

The SB's Standout Strength: Alignment Across Stakeholders

Criteria question: How much does the method encourage input and feedback from different stakeholders (consumers, security, product, and engineering) to ensure the design satisfies all parties?

This is arguably the defining characteristic of the Synergetic Blueprint. The method is built around collaborative workshops at every phase.

In Phase I (Enterprise Design), business experts and enterprise architects work together on the Business Model Canvas, Capability Map, and Wardley Map. This creates early alignment between business strategy and technology direction, something that many API design methods skip entirely by starting at the technical design level.

In Phase II (Strategic Design), the participant list expands to include solution architects, developers, security experts, and UX experts [1]. The Domain Storytelling, EventStorming, and Context Mapping workshops are fundamentally cross-functional exercises. They require domain experts and engineers to be in the same room, telling stories about real business scenarios, debating where boundaries should be drawn, and agreeing on a shared language. The tacit knowledge that surfaces in these sessions (the edge cases, the political constraints, the "that is not actually how it works in practice" corrections) is extremely valuable and difficult to capture through any other means.

In Phase III (Tactical Design), the API Product Canvas serves as a shared artifact that communicates design decisions across roles. I noted in Issue #67 that the Canvas "reduces the transactional cost involved in communicating design decisions to other stakeholders." An API design review team can look at the Canvas and quickly understand the value proposition, the core functions, and the domain context of the API, without having to read through the full API contract.

I do have one reservation, which I've mentioned in a previous post. The heavy workshop approach comes with a coordination cost that can become a bottleneck in organizations where cross-team collaboration is politically or culturally difficult.

The SB's Biggest Gap: Security, Privacy and Performance Requirements

Criteria question: How much does the method encourage "shifting left" on security concerns like authentication and authorization? Does it capture sensitive data concerns, performance/latency expectations, and abuse prevention requirements like rate-limiting at design time?

I think this is the Synergetic Blueprint's weakest area. The method's focus is firmly on domain modeling, business alignment, and stakeholder collaboration. Security, privacy, and performance concerns do not feature as first-class design activities.

The API Product Canvas does have space for defining request and response data, but there is no explicit section for authentication and authorization requirements, data sensitivity levels, or performance SLAs. The Strategic Design workshops surface what happens in the business domain and who is involved, but they do not systematically ask what data is sensitive, who should be authorized to perform this action, or what are the latency expectations for this workflow. While the SB does list security experts as participants in Phase II workshops [1], the workshop techniques themselves are not designed to elicit security or performance requirements.

Similarly, performance requirements (response time SLAs, throughput expectations, rate-limiting policies) are absent from the prescribed process. An API might be beautifully aligned with the domain model but fail in production because no one captured the requirement that it needs to respond in under 200 milliseconds.

Some may argue these concerns belong later in the lifecycle, but authentication models and data sensitivity classifications need to be known at design time to shape the API's contract.

I would suggest two improvements. First, add a "Security, Privacy, and Performance" section to the API Product Canvas — capturing authentication method, authorization model, data sensitivity classification, rate-limiting requirements, and target response time. Second, consider a lightweight threat-modeling step between the Strategic Design and Tactical Design phases. Neither addition would add significant overhead, but they would make the SB much more robust for enterprise use.

Overall Assessment

The Synergetic Blueprint's greatest strength is its deep integration of Domain-Driven Design with collaborative API design. For organizations operating in complex domains with rich business logic (financial services, insurance, healthcare, logistics), this is exactly what is needed.

Where the SB falls short is in areas adjacent to its core focus. Particularly, security, privacy, and performance requirements are not treated as first-class concerns. And the learning curve is steep for teams without DDD experience.

These gaps are not fatal. They could be addressed by adding a few lightweight steps to the process (e.g., a security section on the Canvas). The foundation is strong. The Synergetic Blueprint gives teams a structured, principled way to design APIs that are aligned with business capabilities. The challenge is extending it to cover the full spectrum of concerns that enterprise API programs need to address.
