Introduction
I am in Helsinki this week for Apidays, where I will be presenting two talks: one on Building High Performance API Platform Teams, and the other on AI APIs: Taming the Wild West with AI Gateways.
I am going to continue my review of various conceptual API toolkits for API governance soon, with a look at how API governance is for industry-level integration in the finance industry. This is not quite ready yet, but look out for this in future issues.
By the way, my research study on the use of AI gateways in the enterprise is yielding many interesting insights. As a reminder, the goal of this study is to research common themes, patterns, trends, tools and challenges in governing the usage of LLM-APIs in AI applications. The study will examine what patterns organisations are adopting to
Manage access to LLM-APIs
Manage the cost of LLM-API usage.
Manage the performance of LLM-APs
Observe and monitor LLM-API usage
Manage Day-2 operations to LLM-APIs (maintenance and improvements)
I would like to invite you to participate in this study. Participants will get the full report, and be able to benchmark themselves against others in the study. If you would like to to take part in this survey, reach out to me at [email protected].
For this week, I have some interesting content links for you. Enjoy!
Interesting Content for the Week
AI API Consumption Governance
LLM Tools: Connecting AI agent to APIs in 1 minute : Jakub Vacek in this article discusses Edgar, an autonomous AI agent designed to connect AI systems to external APIs efficiently.
MCPX: From Local Experimentation to Production-Grade Infrastructure: Rotem Yohanan from Lunar.dev discusses MCPX and how it bridges local experimentation with scalable deployment, addressing the limitations of MCP, which was initially designed for local use, thereby transitioning from initial local experimentation to a robust, production-grade infrastructure.
Generative AI only works if it’s private: Peter Ableda in this article discusses that enterprises, particularly those in regulated industries, privacy is not merely a preference but a fundamental prerequisite. He emphasis that it is crucial establishing systems that engender trust.
Platform API Production Governance
API governance is about people: This article by Budhaditya Bhattacharya discusses effective API governance as beign fundamentally about people, rather than being solely a technical or procedural concern, and how its ultimate success hinges upon the engagement, empowerment, and collaboration of the individuals involved in the API lifecycle.
Programming Is Mostly API Archaeology Now: Aphinya in this article explores how modern software development increasingly revolves around understanding and integrating APIs rather than writing code from scratch.
The Essential Guide to Load Balancing Strategies and Techniques: In this article by Javinpaul and Hayk they present the importnce of load balancing in an era demanding high-availability systems and instant digital experiences. It discusses load balancing as not only a matter of distributing network traffic but as a sophisticated discipline fundamental to the resilience, fault tolerance, and horizontal scalability of distributed systems.
A Deep Dive into HTTP: From HTTP 1 to HTTP 3: In this article Bytebytego gives a thorough explanation of Hypertext Transfer Protocol, tracing its development from the initial HTTP/1.0 standard through to the contemporary HTTP/3. It underscores HTTP's crucial part as the base of modern internet communication, facilitating browser requests, interactions with Application Programming Interfaces (APIs), and queries between backend services.
Tools updates/New release
Kong AI Manager: Govern & Observe Agentic Traffic to Thousands of LLMs: Kong launches AI Manager, a new feature within Kong Konnect, designed to govern, secure, and observe AI traffic across large-scale deployments.
Instantly Preview SDKs from your OpenAPI Spec: Speakeasy introduces Sandbox Instant SDK Preview, a browser-based tool that allows developers to upload their OpenAPI specifications and instantly preview production-ready SDKs.
Introducing Claude 4: Anthropic launches Claude 4, introducing two new AI models: Claude Opus 4 and Claude Sonnet 4
New capabilities for building agents on the Anthropic API: Anthropic introduces new API capabilities to enhance the development of AI agents, particularly within its Claude 4 model lineup.
Harness Adds MCP Server to Expose Data to Third-Party AI Tools: Harness, has disclosed the development of a Model Context Protocol (MCP) server.
Videos
What does API Brownout actually mean? : What does "API brownout" even mean? This video shows how to use API brownouts to deprecate endpoints responsibly without breaking your users.
Claude Code: Anthropic's CLI Agent: The Video explores how Claude Code, a command-line interface (CLI) AI agent, assists developers with coding, debugging, and workflow automation.
Your API is not an MCP : This video discusses how companies are incorrectly auto-generating Model Context Protocol (MCP) servers from their APIs, rather than designing them specifically for LLM consumption.
